Understanding FSSAI Licences: Which One Does Your Business Need?
One of the first questions every food entrepreneur asks is, “Do I need an FSSAI licence?” The answer is simple—if you’re involved in manufacturing, processing, packaging, storing, distributing, or selling food, the answer is yes.

FSSAI offers three types of registrations:

Basic Registration – Suitable for small food businesses.

State Licence – Required for medium-sized businesses operating within a state.

Central Licence – Mandatory for large businesses, importers, exporters, and companies operating across multiple states.

Apart from obtaining the licence, food businesses must also comply with labelling requirements, hygiene standards, and food safety regulations.

Many entrepreneurs delay their application or apply for the wrong category, leading to unnecessary delays. Understanding the correct licence at the beginning can save both time and effort.

Remember, FSSAI compliance isn’t just a legal requirement—it also builds trust with consumers and business partners.

FTP Expert Tip: If you plan to grow your business, choose a licensing strategy that
supports future expansion rather than only your current turnover.
